North Korea resumes operations of warship following May incident, Kim labels it as 'criminal'

North Korea’s Warship Launch Back on Track After Setback

North Korean state media reports that a warship, which experienced a mishap in May, has now been repaired and is once again operational. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the warship has returned to an upright position underwater.

During a recent event, leader Kim Jong-un addressed the issue and reflected on the failed launch. “When I launched this destroyer at Jungjin last month, I felt panic over an unexpected and absurd accident,” he admitted.

Kim did not minimize the incident, describing it as a severe criminal act rather than a mere mistake. Following this, the Chief Engineer of the Chongjin Shipyard and others involved were reportedly arrested. This shows a rather intense response from the regime.

Despite the setback, Kim’s ambitions for expanding North Korea’s naval capabilities seem undeterred. “A new generation of warships will be released successively in the coming years, and they are intended to form the backbone of our maritime defense,” he claimed.

Reports indicate that the ship, named “Kang Kon,” was relocated to the Rajin shipyard for necessary adjustments. However, the full extent of damage remains unclear as it has not yet left the drying dock.

Initially, satellite images revealed that the Kang Kon had slipped off its ramp during the earlier attempt, which caused part of the vessel to sustain damage. Now, even signs of its launch seem to indicate a struggle; the ship’s bow cannot leave the ramp properly.

Interestingly, this warship represents the second destroyer launched within a month, following a successful deployment of a 5,000-ton vessel from Nampo, situated on the country’s western coast. So, it seems North Korea is still pushing forward with its military aspirations, even amid challenges.
