Three detained after protest in Portland escalates at federal ICE facility

Multiple Arrests in Portland During Riot Near ICE Facility

On Saturday night, a series of clashes in Portland, Oregon, resulted in multiple arrests after four officers were injured during a riot close to an Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility.

According to a statement from the Portland Police Department (PPB), three individuals were arrested after officers responded to reports of “criminal conduct” at a federal building in South Portland.

“The arrests were made due to criminal behavior, not because of freedom of speech,” the PPB emphasized. “Those involved in violent actions or damaging property will face investigations leading to potential arrest and prosecution.”

This unrest followed a “No Kings” protest that took place earlier in the day, which was characterized by authorities as a significant “free speech gathering” with tens of thousands of attendees.

Later in the evening, police responded to the federal facility when they became aware of injuries to a federal officer caused by the crowd. The PPB advised attendees not to interfere with medical efforts taking place inside the facility.

Once the situation calmed, it was indicated that the federal officers involved did not require medical assistance.

Amidst the chaos, the PPB declared a riot due to ongoing criminal actions in the vicinity. Homeland Security Advisor Tricia McLaughlin reported that protesters launched fireworks, used smoke grenades, threw rocks at law enforcement, shattered windows, and attempted to breach the ice facilities.

Earlier reports indicated that while federal law enforcement managed to secure the facility, four officers sustained injuries during the disturbances.

During the night, PPB made several key arrests. For instance, 25-year-old Sabian Christos was taken into custody just after 8 p.m. for attempting to assault a security officer. Another individual, 20-year-old Tyson Kerner, was arrested around 10:50 p.m. after allegedly throwing rocks into the ICE building, facing several charges including attempted assault and harassment.

Further, Cory Oyen, 38, was apprehended around 1 a.m. on Sunday for driving under the influence and for first-degree theft after police observed him collecting traffic controls and loading them into a truck.

All three individuals were booked at the Multnomah County Detention Center. The police indicated that further arrests could follow as the investigation stretches on.

Interestingly, the PPB noted that even if no arrests are immediate during high-tension moments, it doesn’t mean individuals won’t face charges later as investigations unfold.
