Alison Arngrim Reflects on a “Little House on the Prairie” Episode

Alison Arngrim, known for her role as Nelly Oleson on “Little House on the Prairie,” shared her thoughts on an episode that wouldn’t quite fit into today’s television landscape. During a recent appearance on the “Little House 50” podcast, she discussed the episode titled “Here Come The Brides,” which aired in 1977. This episode featured a story about her character and a teenage boy, Luke Sims, who rushes into a romantic escapade.

In the plot, Sims and Oleson elope, but their parents intervene, bringing them back to face the consequences. It’s interesting to note that Arngrim, at the time of filming, was only 15, while her character was portrayed as 13. She mused about how she felt like a “super… teenager,” caught up in “adolescent madness.”

Bob Marsic, who played Sims, was 22 back then. Arngrim joked about the awkwardness of filming their scenes, particularly when they had to share a kiss. Arngrim pointed out how different things are now; the innocence portrayed back then seems almost out of place today—what was cute then might not fly now.

She remarked on how interesting it was that young kids in that scenario were not portrayed as shy but rather assertive towards older male characters like Sims. “That wouldn’t happen today, would it?” she mused, referencing how scripts have shifted since then. Her comments opened up a discussion about boundaries in storytelling and the presence of intimacy coordinators, which were nonexistent in the past.

Recalling the filming experience, she described how quickly things progressed; their first kiss occurred very early on—perhaps even on the second day of shooting. “It was like ‘Hello, introduction, now you’re in love,'” she laughed. She noted that, despite the age difference between the actors, today’s standards would likely view such scenes much more cautiously.

There was a moment on set that she found strange—when Marsic’s girlfriend showed up, making her feel awkward because of their romantic scenes. “Does she think I’m a threat?” Arngrim joked about herself, pointing out how unlikely that seemed considering she was just a 15-year-old girl. “I’m not stealing your man,” she quipped. It highlighted how, while filming romantic scenes could be intense, the perceptions around them have dramatically changed since then.

In interviews, Butler has also reflected on working with Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura, during their time on the show. He described the atmosphere on set and how it contributed to shaping their young characters’ relationships. It was a time filled with both excitement and anxiety, particularly for Gilbert, who was not experienced in the world of romance at that age.

Butler’s insights revealed that, despite any challenges they faced, they managed to navigate their roles successfully. “I think a lot of young actresses could have folded under pressure,” he noted about Gilbert. It’s fascinating to think about how the dynamics of young romance have evolved in both real life and on screen—all of which adds layers to how we view such classic episodes today.
