New York City father taken to a Pedro Pascal lookalike contest and becomes the winner

This Mandalorian won his prize.

A Brooklyn dad, George Gowntas, participated in a look-alike contest for actor Pedro Pascal on Sunday, and to his surprise, he won.

At his son’s restaurant, Del North Mexicon, located in the Lower East Side, Gowntas earned $50 for being the closest resemblance to Pascal, who is famous for roles in “The Mandalorian” and “Game of Thrones.”

According to his wife, Jenny Gunia, the resemblance started catching people’s attention back when “Game of Thrones” first premiered. “That’s when we first heard it,” she recalled, talking about how others recognized her husband’s likeness to the actor.

“Then some kids started paying attention to it, so when we saw the contest, I thought, ‘It’s Father’s Day. You have to go. It’ll be your treat for the day,'” Gunia mentioned, adding that her husband might now be celebrated everywhere.

Gowntas, who lives in Greenpoint, managed to outshine nearly 30 competitors for the title.

Anisha Garcia, the restaurant’s chef and co-owner, explained that the idea for the contest arose from Pascal’s quip in 2023 about the lack of decent Mexican food in New York City.

“Sorry, but is there no decent Mexican food in New York?” Garcia recounted. “And we were like, ‘We’re here, we’re offering it.’

Co-owner Wim Shih added that the contest aimed to uplift spirits during challenging times. “There’s so much sadness in the world right now. We wanted to be a little ray of sunshine amidst it all,” she said.

Among the contestants was one participant wearing a T-shirt that read “Protecting dolls and protecting all immigrants,” a nod to the actor’s support for his transgender sister, Lux Pascal.

Pascal has gained significant acclaim for his performances, including Oberyn Martell in “Game of Thrones” and Joel Miller in “The Last of Us.”

The contest adds to a string of celebrity look-alike events occurring across five boroughs, including a recent Timothée Chalamet contest held at Washington Square Park in October.
