Sen. Cotton supports sending troops to Los Angeles during anti-ICE protests

Senator Tom Cotton faced questions on Sunday from CBS host Margaret Brennan regarding his past statements advocating for military support in response to unrest in Los Angeles. Brennan pointed out that Cotton had previously supported President Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops and active-duty Marines to California, labeling the situation an acute threat and referring to community fears.

In a recent piece for the Wall Street Journal, Cotton implied that the time might be right for military intervention, citing concerns about left-wing groups causing disturbances. He argued that the lack of action from local leadership often leaves law enforcement unable to restore order in chaotic situations.

“Certainly, when you observe leftist militias hurling objects at law enforcement and engaging in reckless behavior, it’s unfortunate that some mayors and governors choose not to enable police to act effectively,” Cotton stated.

He suggested that if state leaders fail to activate the National Guard, it becomes the president’s duty to intervene. Cotton emphasized the importance of local police being empowered to manage situations and safeguard community safety.

His stance coincides with Trump’s recent deployment of federal troops to Los Angeles amidst escalating protests, reminiscent of the debates during the summer of 2020 concerning the Black Lives Matter protests in various cities.

Brennan countered Cotton’s claims by referencing the Los Angeles Police Chief’s assurance that the department had the riots under control, contradicting Cotton’s observations from the previous weekend.

Cotton mentioned his plans for new legislation aimed at strengthening penalties for violence against law enforcement and making protest-related offenses grounds for deportation of undocumented immigrants. He also pointed out that the current Republican budget proposal includes extra funding for immigration authorities to expedite the deportation process for certain offenders.

“These are just practical measures,” he argued, expressing frustration that Democrats have not recognized their significance. Cotton underscored the need for maintaining public order and protecting citizens.
