Infant Given Up at Mississippi Safe Haven Baby Box

A newborn was surrendered to a Safe Haven Baby Box in Mississippi, marking the state’s second such incident, according to reports.

The infant was placed in a baby box at Simpson General Hospital in Mendenhall last week. This baby box, which opened in January 2024, is the second of its kind in the state.

The purpose of baby boxes is to offer a secure alternative for parents who may feel they have no options, helping to prevent unsafe abandonments that could endanger the child. These temperature-controlled incubators are typically built into the exterior of fire stations, police stations, and hospitals, allowing at-risk mothers to safely and legally leave their newborns. Once a baby is placed inside, the outer door locks automatically, giving the mother time to leave before an alert goes off.

After being placed in the box, the baby is promptly taken to the hospital for a wellness check. Generally, the child is then placed in state custody and, often, adopted shortly after.

“If the community embraces anonymous surrender, it could significantly alter outcomes. It helps prevent the tragic abandonment of infants and spares mothers from potential legal consequences,” an advocate noted. “This mother acted selflessly. I understand these decisions are incredibly difficult. Soon, this infant will find a family that has been hoping for them.”

Since 2017, at least 59 infants have been surrendered through the Safe Haven Baby Box initiative, which now has over 340 locations across the country, including five in Mississippi.

The organization offers support to women in crisis, providing free, confidential counseling that adheres to each state’s safe shelter laws through a national hotline. The message emphasizes the importance of awareness around safe surrender options.

In Mississippi, newborns up to 45 days old can be legally surrendered at hospitals, fire departments, EMS providers, licensed adoption agencies, and baby boxes.
