Close to 600 Ballots Were Not Counted After Being Missed in Drop Box in California County

Unopened Ballots Found in California County Post-Election

Recently, Humboldt County in Northern California faced scrutiny after approximately 600 unopened ballots were found, which election officials deemed “unacceptable.” The Humboldt County Elections Department noted that 596 sealed ballots intended for the statewide special election in November were discovered at the bottom of a locked drop box.

This ballot measure revolves around Proposition 50, a plan proposed by Governor Gavin Newsom aimed at establishing new congressional districts, with opponents suggesting it tilts the scales in favor of Democrats.

Fortunately, it seems the uncounted ballots didn’t sway the result, as the measure passed by over three million votes. According to the election office, a miscommunication led to confusion about whether the mailboxes were entirely empty during their checks.

Juan Pablo Cervantes, the County Clerk, Recorder, and Registrar of Voters, expressed regret, acknowledging, “The results are unacceptable and go against the core of this office’s philosophy. While this mistake occurred because election officials didn’t adhere to proper procedures, ultimately I am responsible for what happened.”

Historically, Humboldt County votes have aligned with Democratic values, so it’s unlikely that the uncounted ballots would have benefited opponents of the measure. Observers noted that Humboldt County voters predominantly identify as Democrats, and there has also been support for the Green Party in recent years.

Cervantes highlighted that measures have already been taken to ensure this doesn’t happen again. New procedures regarding ballot drop boxes have been introduced, aimed at physically verifying each box before finalizing results. “I can assure you that we are taking this matter seriously,” he added.

Covering a vast 4,052 square miles, Humboldt County has about 136,000 residents. Located near the Oregon border, it boasts stunning coastlines and extensive redwood forests, with a significant amount of privately-owned woodlands.

Additionally, the region is well-known for its marijuana cultivation, both legal and illegal, and is a leading producer of cannabis in the U.S.

The revelation about the unopened ballots comes amidst ongoing allegations of voter fraud in California. Some have linked these allegations to former President Donald Trump, who labeled the election process “rigged” shortly after voting commenced on Proposition 50.

Critics, including White House press secretary Caroline Levitt, have pointed fingers at California’s universal mail-in voting system as a potential source of fraud and have even accused the state of including votes from illegal immigrants.

Meanwhile, concerns have grown in other counties, too, with Riverside County’s sheriff investigating around 650,000 ballots for potentially fraudulent counts from the November election.

Proposition 50 proposes allowing states to utilize congressional maps created by Congress for upcoming elections instead of those designed by the Independent Redistricting Commission, which was intended to minimize partisan influence.

The proposal is viewed as Newsom’s counteraction to Texas’ recent redistricting efforts, which aimed to increase Republican congressional representation.

Despite the measure’s approval and potential changes to congressional districts, California Democratic Party leaders have stated they do not plan to redraw maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Rusty Hicks, the chairman of the California Democratic Party, indicated that the focus should be on winning seats with the current maps drawn last year, calling any further alterations “a step too far.”
