Sean Casey’s Return to Cincinnati Ends with Injury
Former All-Star Sean Casey made a return to Cincinnati for a banana ball event, but unfortunately left the game with a torn hamstring.
During his first at-bat for the Savannah Bananas on Friday, Casey walked on four pitches. The final pitch was well outside the strike zone, allowing him to rush to first base and then attempt to head towards second.
However, as he turned, he suddenly grabbed his hamstring. He quickly retreated to the base and then walked to the dugout.
Reds announcer Gym Day provided the unfortunate update during Saturday’s Reds vs. Tigers game, stating that Casey had “torn his hamstring completely apart.”
Day remarked, “I thought he was just joking with the crowd. You know, playing it up as an older guy struggling to run.”
Casey wasn’t the only Reds alumni present; other notable players like Todd Frazier, Danny Graves, and Bronson Arroyo also made appearances at the festival.
Even though the injury was a disappointing way to wrap up his time with the Savannah Bananas, Casey still enjoyed the experience, stating, “What a moment in Cincinnati to have another at-bat before the greatest fans in the world! Thanks to the Savannah Bananas and Jesse Cole for the opportunity. Banana balls are a lot of fun.”
Since retiring, Casey has launched the Mayor’s Office podcast, which he continues to maintain.
Casey, who played with the Reds from 1998 to 2005, served as the Yankees’ hitting coach in 2023.
Banana Balls have gained popularity, offering a unique twist on traditional baseball. The game includes various performances and stunts, adding to the entertainment value.
This incident marks one of the first serious injuries in a banana ball event, highlighting the unpredictability of these games.
