Joe Mauer to Compete in American Century Championship
Joe Mauer, a well-known figure from the Minnesota Twins, is set to take part in the American Century Championship next month, held near Lake Tahoe.
Last year, Mauer finished tied for 16th, marking one of his better performances in recent times. In a conversation with Fox News Digital, he expressed his appreciation for the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club but acknowledged that there are still aspects of his golf game that he needs to improve.
Mauer shared his excitement about the upcoming tournament, saying, “The last few years have been great. It’s been a wonderful tradition to bring the family out during the summer, and the place is just beautiful.”
Yet, he was candid about his golf skills: “I could use a bit more practice. Competing alongside other top athletes and entertainers is a lot of fun—it really feels like a mini tour for a few days, and the atmosphere is fantastic.”
The former baseball player enjoys hitting the tees and aims for some solid shots in this unique tournament setting.
Interestingly, Mauer isn’t the only sports star in the mix. A WWE star has reportedly pledged to take on NBA legend Charles Barkley at this year’s event.
Mauer’s journey with golf began after he relocated to Florida post-MLB draft, allowing him to play regularly during his career. “Now that I’m retired, I find myself really enjoying the game. I have more opportunities to play, and while it’s definitely challenging, I think it’s about trying to improve,” he noted.
The American Century Championship festival is scheduled from July 9 to July 13, and it also serves a philanthropic purpose, raising funds for both local and national charities. The tournament employs a 54-hole Stableford format, rewarding golfers with points based on their performance at each hole, and the participant with the highest points takes home the win.
Last year, Mardy Fish claimed the title, while Stephen Curry emerged victorious in 2023. Curry is returning to compete again this year.
