Tukwila, Laundry
While the No Kings March in Seattle attracted much of the public’s focus on Saturday, another gathering took place at the Homeland Security Department building, which is just a brief drive away. Approximately 100 participants, primarily clad in black, divided into two groups and effectively obstructed the driveways to stop government vehicles from departing.
An Antifa activist physically blocked one of the driveways, using traffic signs and other nearby items to construct makeshift barriers. Initially, only three officers, who were under federal protection, observed the situation at the southern end of the building.
Things escalated when members of the Tukwila Police arrived and ordered the protestors to move from the driveway. Facing the DHS building, the Antifa group turned back defiantly, refusing to leave. As Tukwila officers pushed through the crowd, they fired crowd control munitions to disperse the unruly gathering.
Following an earlier federal operation, Los Angeles became the location for long-term protests, which seemed to inspire similar actions on the left.
Local police were assisted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents who emerged from the building to help clear the area. At least one member of the protest was arrested by federal agents. After clearing the driveway, federal vehicles were able to depart.
Even after being forced onto the sidewalk, the crowd didn’t completely disperse. In fact, police faced aggression when they retreated, prompting CBP agents to return to the building while some ANTIFA participants attempted to rebuild the barricades with available materials.
This scene at Tukwila is just one example of an increasingly violent response to the Trump administration’s stringent immigration enforcement. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Facility in Portland, Oregon, which was notably targeted by ANTIFA in 2020, has experienced daily attacks over the past week. Recent videos showed DHS agents facing opposition from protestors.
Four police officers have reportedly sustained injuries. A clear message to the rioters from Secretary Noem is that their efforts will not deter law enforcement. ICE and other federal agencies will persist in enforcing the law.
There remains uncertainty regarding how long the far left will sustain their momentum. With the active presence of U.S. Marines and National Guard in Los Angeles, attention is drawn to how immigration enforcement activities will evolve in response to President Trump’s policies.
