Rapper Lizzo Misinterprets Sheriff Ivy’s Protest Warning
Rapper Lizzo recently took to social media, misquoting Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivy. She claimed he warned that those protesting illegally could face severe consequences, even death.
Last week, Sheriff Ivy cautioned protesters against obstructing local roadways, suggesting that drivers might not stop and could pose a danger. He also mentioned that any protester who assaulted police or threatened them with weapons would face serious repercussions, saying that their actions could lead to dire consequences.
However, Lizzo misunderstood his message and claimed the sheriff was threatening anyone exercising their First Amendment rights to protest. She suggested that this implied a desire to harm peaceful demonstrators.
In his remarks, the sheriff explicitly stated that no one has the right to disregard the law while protesting. He emphasized that anyone defying a legal order would end up in jail. Ivy warned that blocking intersections or fleeing from arrest would be met with serious action.
If protesters became violent or aggressive towards law enforcement, they could expect to face significant force in return. His comments conveyed a clear message: the department would not tolerate violence or disorder.
Lizzo, however, seemed to focus more on the potential for violence rather than understanding the cautionary tone of the sheriff’s warning. She articulated her belief that law enforcement actions against protesters equated to unconstitutional behavior. She referenced historical figures from early American history, indicating that issues surrounding protest rights have deep roots.
She declared that the nation is currently in a “constitutional crisis,” though she did not clarify what she meant by this statement. Emphasizing the importance of civic engagement, she called upon people to remember their constitutional rights and to stand up for them.
