Josh Hawley takes a stance on Medicaid reductions, encourages Republicans to align with Trump's example

Hawley’s Warning on Medicaid Cuts

Senator Josh Hawley has once again made his stance clear regarding potential cuts to Medicaid benefits. He urged his colleagues to heed President Donald Trump’s example and to keep widely utilized healthcare programs mostly intact.

The Senate committee, led by Republicans, has been working for the past few weeks following the House GOP’s advancement of its version of the president’s extensive proposal.

Concerns From Blue Republicans Over Tax Rule Changes

The committee tasked with overseeing healthcare and tax policy is expected to unveil portions of a budget adjustment package soon. Specifically, the House GOP’s Medicaid provisions are a point of contention for a few Senate Republicans.

Changes within the Senate could either propel or stall the larger legislative initiative.

Hawley, representing Missouri, has consistently expressed that he won’t back any package that diverges from the president’s vision for his constituents. However, his perspective on Medicaid stands in stark opposition to the Fiscal Hawks, who advocate for steeper cuts.

Hawley emphasizes the importance of aligning with Trump’s wishes, stating, “I often remind my colleagues, would you not want to listen to the person who has proven to win elections and has expressed a desire to keep Medicaid intact?”

In a recent press meeting, he noted the inclusion of his Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), designed to aid those affected by nuclear waste.

According to Hawley, the addition of RECA might serve as an incentive for him to support the broader measure, given that it’s been a top priority for him over the past two years. Nevertheless, Medicaid remains a crucial topic in the reconciliation discourse.

He expressed some acceptance of changes to Medicaid suggested by his House Republican counterparts.

Importance of Medicaid for Missouri Workers

Notably, he highlighted that approximately 1.3 million residents of Missouri depend on Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), asserting that the majority are employed.

“These individuals are not idle; they are working hard and yet cannot afford private health insurance, which is why they rely on Medicaid,” he explained. “It’s unjust to tell them, ‘You’re doing your best, but we’re going to take away your healthcare access.'”
