Ways to keep strawberries and blueberries fresh for a longer time, based on expert advice

There’s been some lively discussion on Reddit about the best ways to store berries, particularly following a new technique shared in a thread on R/Foodhacks. Users seem to feel a bit proud of this recently popularized Berry Hack.

One user expressed their frustration with store-bought raspberries, saying, “I’m really tired of them, so I thought I’d try something different.” They detailed a method where you wash raspberries thoroughly, dry them with paper towels, and store them in an airtight glass container that has a paper towel at the bottom.

This new approach reportedly kept the berries fresh in the fridge for up to nine days. However, the user admitted they had to toss out three berries that were starting to spoil. “I think it was pretty successful overall,” they concluded.

Other Redditors chimed in with their own tips for prolonging the life of berries. One suggested that washing them with a bit of vinegar could help maintain their freshness. Another pointed out that some berries, like blueberries, are sturdier than more fragile fruits like strawberries and raspberries, which can bruise easily.

“We use baking soda on everything but onions. It seems to keep mold and bacteria at bay,” another user said. Yet, there were also different opinions. One person’s hack was to keep the berries in their original, unwashed container and simply place it in a Ziploc bag before refrigeration.

There were even some light-hearted comments about berries disappearing quickly, with one user joking, “Raspberries never last nine days around me.”

Storage Recommendations

Mark Weiser, co-founder of a specialty foods company, offered several suggestions for berry storage:

  1. Wash berries right before you’re ready to eat them, and avoid rinsing under running water.
  2. Soak them gently in a bowl of water to avoid damaging their delicate structure.
  3. Fill a bowl with cold water, place the berries in a colander, and soak them. This uniform wash protects them, according to Weiser.
  4. After washing, transfer the berries to an airtight container lined with paper towels for storage.

Weiser emphasized that different berries have unique cleaning needs. By adapting the storage method to the specific type, you can enhance their longevity and flavor. He noted that while plain water is adequate for washing, adding vinegar or baking soda can more effectively remove pesticides and bacteria.

For those concerned about pesticide residue, a vinegar soak is especially recommended. Mixing four parts water with one part white vinegar and soaking strawberries for about 20 minutes can be beneficial. Just remember to rinse them thoroughly afterward.

In the end, Weiser reminded everyone not to wait too long to enjoy their berries. “Keeping them cold and dry and avoiding washing until just before consumption can help minimize waste,” he said.
