Federal Judge Rules NIH Grant Cuts Discriminatory

A federal judge has ruled that some grants from the National Health Institute were illegal, describing the cuts as discriminatory during a statement made on Monday.

Judge William Young expressed hesitance in drawing his conclusion, stating, “I have a disparageous obligation to draw it—this represents racism and discrimination against the American LGBTQ community.” He stressed the importance of calling out such actions as part of his duty.

Young, serving in the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts, was appointed back in 1985 by President Ronald Reagan.

“We are so wrong discrimination by our government that we ask the court to ban it, and at the right time, I will do it,” he added, referring to the unfair treatment.

HHS Communications Director Andrew Nixon mentioned that they are “exploring all legal options,” including the potential for an appeal against the ruling.

In response, Nixon critiqued the decision behind the NIH funding cuts, saying they were influenced by ideological agendas rather than the scientific rigor needed for meaningful outcomes for the American people. Under Trump’s administration, he claimed, the Department of Health and Human Services is focused on ensuring taxpayer dollars support evidence-based practices.

On the other side, a White House spokesman, Kush Desai, criticized the judge for allegedly airing personal political views within judicial proceedings. He stated, “It is frightening that a federal judge will use court proceedings to express his political preferences… How can a judge ensure a fair decision when he expresses his biases?”

Meanwhile, the White House deputy press secretary noted that the previous policy was founded on flawed logic linking abilities to racial backgrounds, something that “Americans overwhelmingly rejected.” He asserted that the Trump administration is working to refocus scientific efforts on biological realities and serious chronic disease issues.
