4 MLB teams that need to acquire players before the trade deadline

A Bold Trade Ignites Excitement in MLB

Recently, Raphael Dever of the San Francisco Giants made waves with a notable trade, prompting fans—not just from the Boston Red Sox, but across the league—to seek clarity. This trade has certainly ramped up the MLB trade season.

As the trade deadline approaches, teams are assessing their positions to determine whether they want to buy or sell. For some, the decision is straightforward. Take the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers; they’re both gearing up for postseason play. Conversely, teams like the Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox are looking towards the future.

Then, you have those teams that find themselves at a crossroads, unsure of their direction. That’s where we come in. Currently, there are four teams that might want to lean towards being buyers as the MLB trading deadline nears.

Kansas City Royals

At first glance, the Kansas City Royals might not seem like a team poised to make moves before the deadline. They’re currently sitting fourth in the AL Central—11 games behind the Detroit Tigers and quite a bit back in terms of losses.

Yet, they’re only a few games away from snagging a wildcard spot, despite their 34-38 record. One area where Kansas City could use some reinforcement? Their hitting. With a team OPS of just .668, they would benefit from bolstering their lineup.

Arizona Diamondbacks

After making a World Series appearance two seasons ago and missing the playoffs in 2024 despite a solid 89-73 record, the Arizona Diamondbacks find themselves having an inconsistent season. They started strong back in mid-May but experienced a tough stretch, losing nine out of ten games.

However, they seem to have rebounded recently. With a 9-4 start in June, they’ve closed the gap to just 6.5 games behind the Dodgers in the division. Given that they’re only three games shy of a wildcard position, it’s clear that adding to their roster makes more sense than subtracting.

The Diamondbacks could specifically use help in their pitching staff, especially after losing ace Corbin Burnes to an ACL injury.

Cleveland Guardians

Looking at Cleveland’s playoff possibilities shows a troubling trend recently. As reported, ESPN currently lists their chances at 28.5%, a noticeable drop from earlier estimates. Baseball Reference gives them a 25% chance to make the playoffs.

Despite this, it’s hard to envision the Guardians becoming sellers, especially since they’re only a game out of the Wild Card chase. However, they have concerns on both offense and in their bullpen. Closer Emmanuel Clase has struggled, matching his career-high in blown saves already. Offensively, their team OPS of .678 isn’t great, further complicating their situation.

Texas Rangers

In sports, timing is everything.

The Texas Rangers find themselves right around the .500 mark, still competitive in the AL West but trailing by five games, and just one game from the wildcard spot. Their playoff odds fluctuate based on different sources, but one good series could propel them back into contention.

Moreover, they’ve got nine games left against the Astros and seven against the Mariners, teams that currently sit ahead of them. The Rangers could certainly improve their lineup, as their team OPS stands at a mere .666—fourth lowest in the league.
