Ja Morant trade evaluations for Trail Blazers and Grizzlies following unexpected trade

Jay Morant Trade Shakes Things Up in the NBA

Jay Morant has been a topic of trade discussions in the NBA for quite some time now, and it seems like the Memphis Grizzlies have finally made a surprising move.

The Portland Trail Blazers have acquired Morant in a deal that sends Jerami Grant and Chris Murray to Memphis. According to reports, the Blazers plan to start Morant alongside Damian Lillard in the backcourt, with Deni Avdija and Donovan Clingan also in the mix, filling the rotation alongside Scoot Henderson, Jrue Holiday, and Toumani Kamara. This marks a significant shift, as Morant has been seen as a central figure in Memphis’s challenges since he was the second overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. The trade seems aimed at initiating a new era under Cam Boozer.

Interestingly, Morant didn’t seem to garner much interest in the market, but the Blazers took a chance to bring him in without sacrificing any draft picks or key players. Let’s take a moment to dissect this deal from both perspectives.

Trail Blazers Boost Roster with Jay Morant

Morant had an impressive start to his career, being named to back-to-back All-Star teams in 2022 and 2023, as well as making the All-NBA Second Team in 2022. Yet, injuries and off-the-court issues have led to a noticeable drop in his performance, including struggles with scoring efficiency.

However, integrating Morant into the Blazers’ lineup feels a bit odd. Lillard, now returning from a torn Achilles at age 36, is expected to reclaim his defensive prowess. Both he and Morant rank as less-than-stellar defenders, which raises questions about how the Blazers will manage defensively in their backcourt. If they go with both Morant and Lillard as starters, one wonders about their defensive capabilities. Yes, they could excel in handling the ball and playmaking, but I hesitate to see Avdija’s role diminish, especially given his breakout last season while controlling the ball. The defensive pairing doesn’t inspire confidence, despite having Clingan and Kamara, as well as Jrue Holiday, to support.

On a positive note, the Blazers didn’t give up much in this trade. Grant’s contract was a burden, and he found it hard to shine alongside other players this season, with two years and $70.6 million left to go. Although Murray has some potential, he was more of a bench player in Portland. Landing Morant, who is still relatively young at 26, could prove advantageous if he regains his former level of play.

Interestingly, Morant is locked into two years and $87 million on his contract. If things don’t pan out, the Blazers could opt to trade him next season as he approaches free agency.

This trade could be a stepping stone for the Blazers, especially as they previously showed interest in players like Jaylen Brown and may still have their eyes on talents like Kawhi Leonard.

Overall, it’s difficult to fault Portland for this move. They didn’t sacrifice any key assets and managed to rid themselves of unproductive contracts. Still, I struggle to see how the pairing of Lillard and Morant will succeed on the court, at least in the short term. I’m intrigued to see what direction Portland takes next.

Grizzlies Reflect on Ja Morant’s Departure

For the Grizzlies, Cam Boozer is now the face of the franchise. He’s seen as one of the top prospects from the 2026 NBA Draft, and with Morant gone, Boozer’s time to shine is now. This trade is a clear indication of how little demand there was for Morant. While Memphis may not have wanted Grant, they seemed cornered into taking him on. It’s likely Grant will become available to other teams soon, or face a potential buyout after a year. Murray, on the other hand, could serve as a backup wing, though he must improve his three-point shooting, which has been dismal at 25% throughout his career.

This entire trade feels more like an exercise in addition and subtraction for Memphis. They already have a good mix of guards, with players like Ty Jerome and Scottie Pippen Jr., along with promising talent in Boozer, Santi Aldama, Isaiah Stewart, and Zach Eady. If Boozer lives up to the hype, Memphis could cultivate an exciting young core, free from Morant’s earlier disruption.

It’s a bit of a melancholy ending for Morant in Memphis. They probably should have traded him sooner, but parting ways now may ultimately be the right choice.
