Militant Attack on Nigerian Christians Results in 200 Deaths

Recent Violence in Benue, Nigeria

Islamic extremists have recently launched attacks in Benue, Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of approximately 200 Christians. A Catholic charity has referred to these incidents as some of the region’s worst atrocities. Reports indicate that extremists targeted individuals who had been displaced by radicalized Fulani herdsmen, and, alarmingly, they set fire to shelters. A pastor from the charity mentioned that they had previously repelled attackers trying to infiltrate St. Joseph’s Church, which is home to over 700 internally displaced individuals.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that militants doused shelter doors in fuel and opened fire while many were asleep, with more than 500 people present during the assault.

Ukuma Jonathan Ambiangby, the parish priest, recounted—rather chillingly—his experience on that fateful morning. “When we heard the shots and saw the militants, we dedicated our lives to God,” he said. The environment was one of utter chaos, with Ambiangby succumbing to fear and falling to the floor when the fire erupted. His description of the aftermath was harrowing: “What I saw was really scary. People were massacred. The bodies were scattered everywhere.”

On that tragic Saturday, at least 100 people lost their lives in continuous attacks that spanned from Friday night into the early hours of Saturday. Hundreds more sustained injuries, many without access to essential medical care.

Initially, the death toll was reported as 100; however, an estimate gathered by the Foundation for Justice, Development and Peace in Makurdi suggested the count could be as high as 200.

An organization known as Aid to the Church in Need described the situation as one of “the worst atrocities in the region.” They noted a troubling rise in coordinated attacks by extremists, suggesting that the entire community is under pressure to flee.

According to the monitoring group Open Door USA, Nigeria ranks seventh on the global list of countries with significant Christian persecution. They highlighted that jihadist violence is escalating, specifically targeting Christians through assaults by groups like Boko Haram and the Fulani Fighters. The group underscores a growing concern that under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership, Nigeria has emerged at the center of directed violence against the church. The failure of the government to protect Christians or hold perpetrators accountable only exacerbates the militants’ power.

In the GWER Western Local Government Area of Makurdi, over 100 individuals have been killed, and upwards of 5,000 people have fled their homes following an attack that began more than three weeks ago.

A January report from the Global Christian Salvation group indicated that nearly 10,000 Christians faced violence at the hands of Islamic extremists between 2022 and 2024.
