Matt Eberflus, the Bears’ head coach, has certainly made his share of errors, but he’s got a few things he’s really working hard on.
“When it comes to developing the quarterback position—and really all my roles with the Bears—we had film sessions every day,” Eberflus mentioned during an appearance on “The Doomsday Podcast” with host Ed Werder. “It was a year-round commitment, so that’s what stuck with me.”
This came after reports indicated that Caleb Williams, the Bears’ rookie quarterback and top draft pick, was reviewing game and practice footage without any guidance from his coaches.
Williams was quoted saying to his father, Carl, “No one will tell me what to look for; I just turn it on,” as reported by ESPN.
There have been indications that both Williams and his father are hesitant about the possibility of him joining the Bears for the upcoming 2024 draft, especially given the team’s turbulent past with quarterbacks.
In fact, Carl expressed concern, telling several agents that he would rather not see his son play for the Bears. This was covered in an upcoming book by Seth Wickersham titled “American Kings: A Biography of a Quarterback.”
“Do I want to go there? I don’t think I can do that,” Caleb was quoted as saying about former Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron in the book.
It’s worth noting that Williams had to deal with an unstable coaching situation and a constantly changing offensive line during his rookie season.
Despite these challenges, glimpses of potential from Williams last season may become more consistent this year. With improvements to the offensive line and Ben Johnson stepping in as the new head coach, there’s a sense of optimism.
Meanwhile, Eberflus is now looking to kickstart his coaching career as he takes on the role of defensive coordinator for the Cowboys.
