Cheryl Reeve's comments about Caitlin Clark were described as 'extremely inappropriate': author

Christine Brennan is not holding back when it comes to Cheryl Reeve.

The USA Today columnist has criticized Team USA coaches and the WNBA’s Lynx for their “surprisingly bad behavior” regarding the selection process for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Brennan particularly highlighted the treatment of rookie Kate Clark from the Indiana Fever.

During an appearance on the “Adam Gold Show” on Monday, she questioned, “How is it acceptable for our Olympic and Paralympic community and coaches to be actively tweeting and engaging on social media about individuals in the selection pool?”

In her recent book, “On Her Game,” Brennan examined Clark’s impact and discussed the dynamics of women’s sports, referencing a post by Reeve on X from May 2024 where she promoted a Lynx game.

Reeve had tweeted, “Tonight’s Action – @minnesotalynx vs @chicagosky. 7pm CST.”

Brennan addressed Reeve’s behavior, stating, “I tweeted about the incredibly poor behavior by Cheryl Reeve and Caitlin Clark, criticizing her for failing to promote a Minnesota Lynx game while only focusing on Caitlin’s game.” A month later, when the 12-player USA women’s team roster was revealed, Clark was notably absent, leading to scrutiny over the selection process, with Reeve at the center of the discussion.

The coach clarified she had no involvement in Jen Rizzotti’s selection decisions, emphasizing that choices were based on basketball merits rather than audience appeal. “We checked more boxes with decisions based on standards, which made it tough to cut some players,” Rizzotti mentioned to the Associated Press last summer. “Sometimes it comes down to position, style of play, and even a coach’s vote.”

Brennan tried to get Reeve’s thoughts on Clark’s exclusion at the time but received no response.

Brennan has also been involved in controversy herself. During last year’s WNBA playoffs, Clark was targeted by Dehonai Carrington from the Suns. In light of the situation, Brennan questioned whether Carrington’s actions were intentional.
