Recent poll shows that most Californians are against this important benefit for undocumented individuals

The majority of people in California seem to disagree with the idea of illegally providing healthcare resources to adults. A survey conducted by the California Institute of Public Policy revealed that about 58% are against it. Interestingly, around 41% of those who supported the initiative did so on the basis of existing local laws. This policy, introduced last year, allows taxpayer funds to be used in conjunction with Medi-Cal, which is California’s Medicaid program, without regard to immigration status.

Interestingly, many respondents had been familiar with a similar notion that had circulated between 2015 and 2023, indicating that this topic has been in public discourse for a while.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has encountered significant challenges with the Medi-Cal program, which has seen the need for billions in loans to stay afloat this spring. His office has suggested various adjustments, such as implementing a “registration freeze” and proposing monthly payments of $100 for individuals recognized under Medi-Cal with certain immigration statuses. Still, it’s unclear how these changes will be received in a Democratic supermajority Congress. Budget talks indicate they might favor offering just $30 a month for those with “inadequate immigration status,” potentially commencing in 2027.

Moreover, there is a push to increase the asset limit for Medi-Cal participants from the $2,000 proposed by the governor back to $130,000, which has raised eyebrows.

Representative Carl Demaio, a Republican from San Diego, commented that a larger percentage of Californians are actually against funding healthcare for illegal immigrants. He emphasized that the debate should center around whether taxpayer money should be allocated to undocumented immigrants instead of helping the poorest residents. This perspective suggests a deeper concern about priorities in public spending, which the poll may not fully capture.

Newsom’s office has made headlines due to the broader economic implications stemming from Medi-Cal and the ongoing debates regarding the state’s budget and immigration-related healthcare costs.

In a statement, Newsom defended his budget proposals, arguing they are intended to protect healthcare for Californians while also fulfilling commitments to the immigrant community. He pointed out that these proposals are significantly influenced by the ongoing challenges, including high healthcare utilization rates.

Fox News Digital reached out to the California Latinx Legislative Conference in light of this poll, as they have consistently raised concerns about how proposed Medi-Cal reforms could affect immigrants. Meanwhile, Congress is contemplating a settlement bill that could also impact state-level decisions regarding Medicaid coverage for undocumented immigrants.
