Violent Incident in Aurora Involves Suspected Gang Members
In a troubling event earlier this month, nine armed individuals believed to be associated with the Tren de Aragua gang caused chaos in a Colorado apartment. Aurora police have made arrests related to this alarming incident, which drew comparisons to similar violent acts linked to this Venezuelan gang.
CCTV footage captured the group as they brandished weapons, repeatedly knocking on doors in an apartment complex near Sixth Avenue and Potomac Streets. Police Chief Todd Chamberlain indicated during a press conference on June 9 that this incident had an unsettling familiarity.
“It might feel like déjà vu,” Chamberlain noted, adding that authorities are taking immediate action. The residents of this apartment were also from Venezuela and had just moved in a couple of days before the incident. After hearing the knocking, they expressed relief that the doors remained closed.
In the wake of the incident, police intensified their investigation, and by June 11 and 12, they arrested two individuals captured in the video. Additionally, four others with known criminal backgrounds have been apprehended.
Chamberlain mentioned that law enforcement has responded to 44 calls to this apartment complex since last August, which have involved various issues, including shots fired and assaults. The police are still trying to identify additional suspects shown in the footage.
The doorbell video is a stark reminder of ongoing gang-related issues. In February, the US designated the Tren de Aragua group as a global terrorist organization, further complicating efforts to eliminate their influence in the US.
Aurora, Colorado’s third-largest city with a population over 398,000, has recently been at the center of discussions regarding the gang’s activities. In 2022, disturbing videos of a large armed gang overtaking an apartment had gone viral, raising public awareness of this ongoing problem.
Concerns around safety in the community remain high, and police efforts continue to focus on addressing the issue before it escalates further.
