Bill Clinton expresses curiosity about whether the Trump administration would attempt to prohibit his new book.

Former President Bill Clinton recently expressed concerns about potential book bans during an interview about his latest thriller, co-written with James Patterson. He pondered if the Trump administration might seek a justification for prohibiting it.

Clinton shared his thoughts after host Jordan Klepper asked if he knew whether “The First Gentleman” would be banned. “I was trying to think of any reason why they might,” he stated.

Patterson, who joined Clinton on “The Daily Show,” remarked on the matter, noting that while it isn’t the White House’s doing, certain areas might suddenly see a shift in attitudes. “They don’t need a reason,” he added, highlighting how it could just take one person’s dislike for a book to initiate a ban.

He expressed concern that the book might indeed face bans in some counties. Patterson, an advocate for free expression, was among around 20 authors who contributed millions to Pen America in 2023 to combat book banning. Reportedly, over 1,500 titles were removed from K-12 schools across the country last year.

Clinton also voiced his disapproval of the growing trend of book bans, stating, “I don’t like it. That’s a bad thing.” He recalled Maya Angelou, who read her poem at his first inauguration, and mentioned how her autobiography, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” was among the titles removed from libraries, including the U.S. Naval Academy Library, due to its diversity, equity, and inclusion content.

Clinton called Angelou’s book “epic,” sharing how it tells the story of a child who loses her voice after trauma but eventually flourishes. “I don’t understand why that’s a problem,” he remarked. He reiterated his stance against book banning, asserting, “I never thought I should stop you from reading them,” even if they might not paint him in a favorable light.
