Democrat Senator Uses Biden Hearing to Criticize Trump’s Competence Instead

Democratic Senator Dick Durbin from Illinois took a minute to listen to a video montage presented by President Donald Trump, aiming to depict him as mentally unfit.

The Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing, titled “Not Suitable for Service: How Biden Put America at Risk and Undermined the Constitution,” centers on claims that former President Joe Biden is allegedly hiding a decline in health. Instead of engaging with the issue at hand, Durbin chose to play a clip of Trump asserting, out of context, that he was experiencing cognitive decline, suggesting a parallel with the current president.

Durbin remarked, “We should think about what unfolded in Alberta, Canada this week. Trump attended a press conference alongside British Prime Minister Kiel’s preferred Prime Minister, stating: ‘You all know the great PM of Britain.’ He then claimed, ‘We just signed it, meaning we have a trade deal with the EU.’ This is clearly inaccurate, as the UK hasn’t been part of the EU for five years,” he stated.

He added, “Now, let’s watch a brief video showing other examples related to cognitive abilities.”

The video featured Trump’s notable comments on various issues, including the Constitution, windmills, Haitian immigration, magnets, and COVID-19.

After the clip, the senator asked, “Do any of these comments raise concerns about cognitive ability? You’re a judge,” suggesting that the audience should reflect on Trump’s remarks.

This isn’t the first time Durbin has diverted a hearing for his objectives. In March, he used another Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on “censorship industrial facilities” as a platform to express his fear that the events surrounding the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots have been distorted.

A report released by Special Advisor Robert Herr in February 2024 noted that Biden mishandled classified documents but chose not to accuse him, as he might be viewed as a “sympathetic and well-meaning older person.” Interview transcripts indicated Biden struggled with memory regarding when he started and ended his vice presidency, even forgetting the day his son Beau passed away.

Yet, main media outlets defended Biden’s clarity, framing Herr’s assessment as partisan and misleading following the transcript’s release.
