According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a convicted child sex offender and an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala were apprehended in Bloomington, Minnesota, after a dramatic attempt to evade arrest.
During a routine traffic stop, Roberto Carlos Munoz refused to leave his vehicle and attempted to flee. While trying to drive away, he inadvertently dragged an ICE officer for about 50 yards. This illegal immigrant is now in federal custody.
The ICE officers involved sustained injuries but are expected to make a full recovery.
DHS reports that Munoz, who entered the U.S. at an unknown time, has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2010, including a conviction for sexual offenses against a minor. He also has prior arrests for domestic assault and multiple driving infractions, including operating a vehicle without a valid license. He was first detained by ICE in 2013.
“Roberto Carlos Munoz is a child sex offender from Guatemala who tried to evade law enforcement and ended up dragging an ICE officer along with his vehicle,” stated Deputy Director Tricia McLaughlin. She noted that thankfully, the injured officers are set to recover. It’s surprising how someone with such a destructive past could live in Minnesota without facing serious consequences, especially under the current administration. Rather than drawing comparisons to oppressive regimes, Governor Tim Walz should acknowledge the bravery of law enforcement for apprehending violent offenders.
