New York City’s Crackdown on Illegal Mopeds

Mayor Eric Adams has taken a firm stance on the issue of mopeds and scooters in New York City. In a recent op-ed, he expressed that New Yorkers have “strong feelings” regarding these vehicles, pointing out that they’ve caused distress among seniors and pedestrians alike.

Adams emphasized the pervasive fear many residents feel due to the sound of mopeds racing through the streets, worrying about potential accidents. He stated, “If it’s illegal to ride, say goodbye.”

Furthermore, the mayor claimed these vehicles are often involved in serious crimes. Unregistered dirt bikes, mopeds, and scooters have been linked to thefts, such as mobile phone snatches and robberies, and sometimes serve as getaway vehicles in violent crimes.

In response, Adams has initiated a campaign to crack down on these illegal vehicles, humorously saying they are “literally crushing” them to improve safety in the city. He noted that over 100,000 illegal vehicles have been confiscated during his administration.

Interestingly, there’s an unspoken aspect to this crackdown; many criminals associated with these activities are believed to be illegal immigrants. Investigative reporter Oren Levy highlighted that organized robbery crews, composed predominantly of immigrants, do target unsuspecting victims, often using violence or intimidation.

Despite the serious issues at hand, the mayor’s discussions seem to skirt around terms like “gang” or delve deeply into the immigration status of those involved. Levy urged that it’s crucial for Mayor Adams to confront these matters directly, perhaps through executive orders that would empower federal authorities to take action.

Looking ahead, Adams might face challenges in the upcoming mayoral election. Polling indicates that he could be trailing behind former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who holds a notable lead.
