Texas Legislators Request Delay of Tesla’s Robotaxi Service

A group of Texas lawmakers has reached out to Tesla, urging the company to push back the launch of its Robotaxi service in Austin. They want the rollout, originally set for this Sunday, June 22nd, to be postponed until September 1st when a new law regulating self-driving cars takes effect.

Recently, the Texas Legislature approved updates to the state’s framework for self-driving vehicle operations. According to the new regulations, commercial operators will need to secure prior permission from the motor vehicle department before operating fully autonomous vehicles on public roads. To obtain this permit, they must show that each vehicle adheres to a series of strict criteria.

Among these requirements are the vehicle’s ability to follow state traffic laws, the inclusion of a recording device, adherence to federal safety standards, and the capability to minimize risks if the automated system malfunctions. Additionally, appropriate registration, title, and insurance must be in place according to Texas laws.

Operators are also required to submit plans to the Public Safety Agency detailing how first responders should interact with self-driving vehicles. This plan should outline communication with fleet support and the procedures for safely removing or towing vehicles if necessary.

The Texas Senators and members of the Austin House delegation believe that postponing the launch until the new law is in effect will better serve public safety and enhance trust in Tesla’s operations. They also stated that, should Tesla proceed with the launch in June, the company must provide reassurance that it complies with the new regulations.

Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, previously mentioned the upcoming Robotaxi service in an interview with CNBC. He noted that testing of the self-driving Model Y is underway in Austin, with no drivers present in the vehicles.

The lawmakers’ request adds to the rising concerns about Tesla’s Robotaxi initiative. Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also contacted Tesla, seeking clarification on their plans for safe operation, including how they will report crashes and ensure compliance with road safety regulations.
