Tensions Rise in Dodgers vs. Padres Game
The rivalry between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres escalated dramatically during the Padres’ 5-3 win at Dodger Stadium on Thursday. The intensity peaked when Padres player Fernando Tatis Jr. came to the plate in the ninth inning with one out, as the Padres led 5-0.
In a noteworthy incident, Dodgers relief pitcher Jack Little threw a fastball that struck Tatis on the hand. This marked the third instance of a Dodgers pitcher hitting Tatis in just seven games this season.
Padres manager Mike Schilt, outraged by the repeated targeting of Tatis, stormed out of the dugout to confront the Dodgers’ bench. As he made his way across the field, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts hurried over, leading to a tense standoff between the two managers until they were separated by their teams. Soon, both benches were emptied as players joined the fracas.
After the situation calmed down, both Schilt and Roberts found themselves ejected from the game. However, the drama didn’t end there. In a fiery climax to the game, as the Padres held a 5-2 lead, Padres reliever Robert Suarez faced Shohei Ohtani. The situation took another turn when Suarez hit Ohtani with a fastball that clocked at 100 mph, striking him in the shoulder.
With Ohtani nearly colliding with the action, he left the dugout to take his base. Suarez was subsequently ejected, adding to the tumult. Notably, this was the second occurrence of Dodgers pitchers hitting Tatis in this series and the sixth over his career.
Despite the Dodgers emerging with a win, all eyes were on Tatis and the results of his X-ray and CT scans. As Padres third baseman Manny Machado remarked, “The Dodgers must hope for a negative result tomorrow. They really should.”
Schilt expressed his frustration, stating that it didn’t matter whether the hits were intentional. “It’s enough, whether it was planned or not,” he said. “We have a guy injured, and he’s one of the best players in the game. Luckily, he’s one of ours.” Meanwhile, Roberts reflected on Schilt’s outburst, admitting it bothered him, especially given that Tatis is a well-respected player.
Roberts concluded with praise for Ohtani, remarking on how he managed to diffuse the situation despite being hit.
Looking ahead, the Dodgers have won three out of the four games this series and five of the seven matchups this season. The two teams are scheduled to meet again from August 15-17 in Los Angeles and August 22-24 in San Diego.
