The Suns have had a tumultuous season, and Kevin Durant suggests that the issues run deep in the locker room.
Former All-NBA center and four-time All-Star DeMarcus Cousins mentioned on “Run It Back” that there was “absolutely” a fistfight in the Phoenix locker room this season.
It’s unclear where Cousins got his information, but Durant, who was present in the locker room, responded.
“We have to compete against this 94 footer,” Durant wrote on social media, addressing Cousins’ claim. “This is some bulls to throw at us. Sure, we were not great this year, but we never got close to that. Never.”
Durant is known for being direct in response to criticism, so it was no surprise that he pushed back against Cousins’ statement.
Despite Cousins’ inflammatory claim about a locker room fight, Durant did share valid critiques regarding the Suns’ season during the segment.
“Phoenix was in a tough spot right from the start,” he explained. “They assembled a team based on star names rather than chemistry. Throwing a bunch of scorers together and expecting a championship just doesn’t work that way.”
Despite a star-studded lineup with Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, Phoenix ended up 11th in the Western Conference and didn’t even secure 40 wins.
Now, it appears Durant is looking toward an offseason trade, while Beal is bound by a two-year, $250 million contract, restricting his options as well.
Cousins, who spent 11 years in the NBA and was a dominant player until injuries took their toll, shared a brief stint with Durant on the Warriors in 2018-19.
Recently, he gained attention for an unexpected confrontation with fans in the Puerto Rico professional basketball league.
