Independence Day Travel Forecast

It looks like Independence Day is shaping up to be a busy one.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) estimates that a record 72.2 million Americans will be traveling at least 50 miles from home between Saturday, July 4th and Sunday, July 6th. To put that in perspective, that’s an increase of 1.7 million from last year and about 7 million more than in 2019.

“After record-breaking numbers during Memorial Day, we’re expecting strong demand for both road trips and air travel during Independence Day week,” noted Stacey Barber, AAA’s Vice President of Travel.

Interestingly enough, around 62 million travelers are expected to hit the roads over the holiday weekend, which is about 1.3 million more than last year.

On the air travel side, AAA anticipates that numbers will also set new records. We’re looking at a possible increase of 1.4% compared to the 576 million travelers recorded last year during the same timeframe.

Based on AAA booking data, the top three destinations for July 4th this year are Orlando (FL), Seattle (WA), and New York (NY). The appeal seems to stem from a mix of cruises, beaches, and spectacular fireworks. Alaska cruises are hitting peak season, while resorts and attractions in Florida and Hawaii are seeing high demand. Plus, cities like New York and Boston are home to some of the nation’s most famous firework displays.

A AAA spokesperson, Aixa Diaz, highlighted that the anticipated travel surge isn’t just about practical choices. It’s also about emotional desires. “People don’t need to spend a fortune; they are more about wanting to escape their everyday routines,” she emphasized.

Christie Jordanmith, a TSA official at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, remarked on the increasing number of travelers: “The last year has seen the top 10 heaviest travel days in TSA history. We expect this trend to continue throughout the summer.” Airport officials are optimistic about using facial recognition technology to help manage crowds, claiming that current wait times have already decreased by 25% due to these advancements.
