State Fully Committed to Working with Federal Immigration Authorities

Tennessee’s Engagement with Federal Immigration Enforcement

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skulmetti has stated that the state is “fully engaged” with the federal government regarding immigration enforcement issues.

In a recent conversation, Skulmetti emphasized that Tennessee is “completely in cooperation” with federal authorities. He mentioned the introduction of a new immigration officer and highlighted a law that will take effect on July 1. This law addresses local governments, immigration regulations, and other related matters. He indicated that the mayor of Nashville is proceeding carefully given these developments.

Skulmetti noted, “I can’t say if all officials are following the same approach. People have the right to express their opposition and share their views on policies they support.”

He added, “There’s a lot of scrutiny from various sides. Those exercising their rights to express dissent can do so, but if there’s an organized effort undermining law enforcement—especially if public funds are involved—that poses a significant issue.”

During the discussion, host Mike Slater inquired about potential actions at the state level to address cities that obstruct federal law enforcement.

Skulmetti speculated that “the federal response could become even more critical, given the possibility of severe penalties.” He elaborated that there are laws allowing the suspension of state funds to local governments if those governments implement policies that conflict with state laws, impacting potential revenue.

He warned, “If local actions push too hard against immigration enforcement, it could lead to significant financial losses for cities.”
