Former President Donald Trump has called for the appointment of a special prosecutor to scrutinize the 2020 presidential election. In a passionate post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump commended his administration’s handling of border crossings, claiming they dropped to zero in May, in stark contrast to the Biden administration, which he says allowed 62,000 immigrants to enter around the same time last year.
He expressed bewilderment over how President Biden could manage such a surge of illegal immigration while also taking aim at the 2020 election.
“Trump’s Moon Zero Border Crossing, sleepy, bent Joe Biden’s 60,000 verse is set to ‘landslide’!” he declared. He went on to criticize Biden, calling him grossly incompetent and insisting that the 2020 election was a complete fraud. “The evidence is massive and overwhelming. A special prosecutor must be appointed,” he insisted.
For quite some time, Trump has maintained that a series of misdeeds contributed to Biden’s victory in 2020. Following the certification of electoral results on January 6, 2021, pro-Trump rallies led to riots at the U.S. Capitol.
Despite persistent efforts from Trump and his supporters to convince Vice President Mike Pence to delay the certification process, Pence staunchly refused, arguing that the Constitution did not authorize the vice president to determine which electoral votes to count.
Trump and his allies filed a number of lawsuits in various states contesting the election results; however, most attempts were thwarted due to lack of standing or insufficient evidence. Ultimately, Biden garnered 306 electoral votes and 81.2 million popular votes, while Trump received 232 electoral votes and 74.2 million.
Trump backed claims suggesting that “mules” harvested votes late at night past deadlines in key swing states, further asserting that the election was “stolen.” He’s been leveraging this narrative in his 2024 re-election campaign using the slogan “too big to rig,” urging his supporters to reclaim power amid what he describes as rigged systems.
“This cannot happen again in the United States!” he said in his recent post. “Let’s get started! This meandering man and his corrupt companions went to our country four years later, so indescribable! Make America great again!”
Following the 2020 election, Trump’s Attorney General, Bill Barr, stated that there was no evidence of fraud that could have impacted the results. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity division labeled the election as the “securest in American history.”
It’s currently unclear who Trump envisions as the special prosecutor, but if Attorney General Pam Bondi hesitates to act, she may face pressure to select someone already confirmed by the Senate. Over recent years, the Justice Department has appointed several special counsels to investigate politically sensitive matters involving figures like Biden and Trump.
