Trump Reveals Upgraded Presidential Jet

On Friday at Joint Base Andrews, President Donald Trump showcased a refurbished presidential jet, highlighting its luxurious features and revamped red, white, and blue design as the Air Force gears up to put it into operation.

The Boeing 747-8i, a gift from the Qatari government and modified for presidential use, is set to serve as a temporary Air Force One while Boeing works on two delayed VC-25B replacements.

During the unveiling, President Trump, flanked by Air Force officials and service members, emphasized the impressive size of the aircraft. “The biggest difference is the size difference. It’s essentially twice the size,” he remarked.

Journalists were then given a quick tour of the interior, which boasted wood-paneled furnishings, gold-tone fixtures, and tan and gold seating. The generous cabin space, large-screen TV, and polished metal finishes added to its luxurious ambiance.

As they moved toward the front, reporters saw private suites with lounge-style seating, a conference room featuring a large table and a painting of the Washington Monument, along with decorative bookshelves highlighting a television screen.

The press cabin, occupying the full width of the aircraft’s rear section, has 24 seats arranged in three sections, each with its own entertainment screen—significantly larger than the current press area on older Air Force One models.

The Air Force announced that the aircraft would soon begin flight trials, the last testing phase before it officially enters service.

Background on the Qatar Aircraft

Air Force Secretary Troy Meinke stated, “The safety and security of our commander-in-chief is our top priority,” noting the careful evaluation of all requirements in order to expedite delivery without compromising quality.

Trump mentioned that his pursuit of this aircraft stemmed from frustration regarding delays in Boeing’s replacement plan and the growing comparisons made between the aging U.S. presidential jet and newer aircraft used by other countries. “I asked the chief executive if we could use a brand new 747,” he said, pointing out the short flight time and age of the current aircraft. “Our country needs to be properly represented,” he added.

Changes to the Aircraft’s Design

This plane features Trump’s preference for a red, white, and navy color scheme, moving away from the light blue and white design that has been synonymous with presidential aircraft since the Kennedy administration. The Air Force confirmed earlier this year that this updated color scheme will be adopted as standard across the Presidential and Executive Airlift Forces, including the VC-25B aircraft currently undergoing development.

Trump commended the craftsmanship of the jet’s interior, calling it “the most luxurious airplane in the world.” He also mentioned that the aircraft could significantly contribute to next year’s celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the nation, predicting it would be part of a July 4 flyover in Washington featuring military aircraft.

The Pentagon had housed the Qatari aircraft last year and spent several months preparing it for the presidential mission. Officials noted that the process moved along quicker than the comprehensive update for Air Force One because of fewer modifications needed.

President Trump also acknowledged the dedication of over 250 employees who worked diligently to prepare the plane for flight, saying it was transformed into the “Flying White House” in about 10 months. The jet is expected to bridge the gap until Boeing delivers the two next-generation Air Force One planes, estimated to take an additional two years for completion.
