Communist group criticizes Zohran Mamdani for misleading the working class

A prominent group of American revolutionary communists recently criticized a socialist mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, in an article titled “Why Communists Can’t Support Zohran Mamdani.” The article takes aim at Mamdani’s ties to the Democratic Party.

Revcom, as the group is known, claims that Mamdani’s approach to socialism is compromised by his association with “corrupt” Democrats. They assert that he manipulates socialist ideals through “false promises.”

Mamdani, who is 33 and a state legislator, mentioned his deliberate effort to, as he puts it, “strengthen that burning party.”

Revcom identifies itself as the U.S. faction of a revolutionary communist international body, initiated in 1992. The group has a history of bold protests, including burning the American flag at a Jason Aldean concert in 2023, while chanting strong anti-American slogans.

In a previous article, Revcom criticized the democratic socialists who support measures like rent freezes and price caps, arguing that Mamdani’s proposal to transform public buses into grocery stores is dividing the working class.

“Despite his grand rhetoric, Zoran is simply a reformer looking to tweak New York City’s budget,” they argued. “In doing so, he misleads the working class about the Democratic Party’s role and the possibility of real change under capitalism.”

Instead, the group advocates for candidates independent of the two major political parties who would further their socialist aims.

Currently, Mamdani is trailing Democratic frontrunner Andrew Cuomo by just 10 points in the upcoming primary scheduled for June 24th. His campaign has yet to respond to requests for comment.
