Details of Operation Midnight Hammer Revealed
During a briefing with Pentagon reporters on Sunday, Chairman Dan Kane shared insights into the covert mission that targeted Iran’s vital nuclear facilities. Dubbed “Operation Midnight Hammer,” the operation was executed under strict secrecy on Saturday night, striking significant sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, resulting in “very serious damage,” as Kane explained.
Now that the bombers have returned, there’s an air of anticipation regarding Iran’s possible response, which could have major implications for the future of the Middle East.
Kane described the operation as “a complex, high-risk mission” executed with remarkable skill. He expressed gratitude to the service members and planners involved, commending their efforts as reflective of the US military’s highest standards. It’s a lot to consider.
On that Saturday night, seven B-2 Spirit stealth bombers took off from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. Kane mentioned that only a select few were privy to the specifics of the timing and details of this operation.
Interestingly, Hegseth noted that after the attack, Congress was informed “quickly,” perhaps suggesting the seriousness of the situation. Within 18 hours, the bombers reached their Iranian targets, benefiting from multiple air refuels along the way. This marked the second-longest mission for B-2s in US history, just shy of a similar operation from Afghanistan post-September 11.
After deploying a 14 GBU-57 “Bunkerbuster” bomb targeting Fordow and Natanz, the bombers left Iranian airspace and sent their missiles toward Isfahan from US Navy ships and submarines positioned south of Iran.
There’s some anxiety surrounding the notion that this strike may draw the US into a prolonged conflict in the Middle East. Still, Hegseth reassured that the current administration is not seeking a change in this mission’s course.
Both officials highlighted that the US military remains prepared to respond if attacks are launched against US installations in the region.
