Pope Calls for Peace Amid Tensions in the Middle East

Following a US military strike targeting Iran’s nuclear capabilities, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the need for diplomacy and called for peace in the region. In his Angelus address on Sunday, he expressed sorrow over the ongoing situation, particularly in Iran and the broader Middle East.

His statements came shortly after President Donald Trump ordered precise strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, aiming to thwart the country’s nuclear ambitions. While the Pope did not explicitly reference the attacks, he articulated that “war does not solve problems” and instead often exacerbates them, leaving deep scars in communities.

“A military victory cannot compensate for the pain of a mother, the fear of a child, or the stolen future,” he remarked, underscoring the high human cost associated with conflict.

“Today, humanity is crying out for peace,” he added, urging the global community to intensify diplomatic efforts to resolve tensions and avert further tragedies.

Pope Leo cautioned against divisive rhetoric that fuels conflict, asserting, “Silence weapons in diplomacy! Let nations forge their future through peaceful means, rather than violence.” He highlighted the everyday suffering of people, particularly in regions like Gaza, where humanitarian needs are growing more urgent.

His appeal coincided with calls from European nations for Iran to return to the negotiating table for peace discussions. Just days prior, representatives from the UK, France, Germany, the EU, and Iran convened in Geneva to seek a resolution; however, Tehran maintained a firm stance against direct engagement with the Trump administration.

Following the Iranian actions, President Trump reiterated his demand for Tehran to pursue peace, labeling it a “bully in the Middle East.”
