Princess Diana’s Fashion Legacy Celebrated at Upcoming Auction

Princess Diana was determined to challenge the Royal Protocol, advocating for her identity as a “free woman.” Her life and style are set to be celebrated at the upcoming auction titled “Princess Diana’s Style and Royal Collection,” which will take place in Los Angeles on June 26. The event will showcase design illustrations by fashion designer Jacques Azagury, alongside swatches of fabric from Diana’s iconic gowns.

Azagury shared his thoughts on keeping Diana’s memory alive, expressing excitement during a private preview at Peninsula Residence in London. He noted how, after their initial meeting back in 1985, Diana had an incredible ability to make those around her feel at ease.

He recalled that first interaction, highlighting how Diana helped him emerge from his own shell. Over the years, Azagury transformed Diana’s style, particularly in her later years when she embraced a more sophisticated look. He reflected on how his goal was to move her away from frilly outfits, emphasizing her evolution as she stepped into a more glamorous role.

Diana’s transformation coincided with her separation from Prince Charles in the early ’90s. According to Azagury, this period allowed her to assert herself through fashion. He recounted how the public began to see a different side of her—confident and self-assured. One of the standout pieces was “The Revenge Dress,” a striking black number she donned in 1994, which symbolized her newfound independence.

Despite the constraints of royal fashion norms, Diana used her wardrobe to convey messages about her life. Azagury noted that her inclination towards black, typically reserved for mourning in royal circles, showcased her defiance and personal growth. He described how she eagerly embraced styles that were bold and revealing, steering away from the conservative fashions of her earlier years.

Reflecting on Diana’s requests, Azagury admitted that while some of her fashion ideas surprised him, they were ultimately met with careful consideration. Their relationship was characterized by mutual support and innovation, leading to striking ensembles like the blue dress designed for an engagement with the British National Ballet.

Even today, Diana’s influence on contemporary fashion persists, with her styles often noted whenever the modern royals are seen in similar pieces. Azagury remarked on the lasting impact of her choices—both in terms of style and the messages they conveyed about boldness and autonomy. The upcoming auction, featuring personal letters and pieces from her collection, promises to highlight the timeless quality of her fashion legacy.

The excitement of the auction is not just about the items up for bid, but it’s really about celebrating a remarkable woman who redefined royal fashion and, in many ways, changed the conversation surrounding the role of women in public life.

The auction will commence on June 26 at Beverly Hills Peninsula.
