Rubio cautions Iran that retaliating would be the 'biggest mistake they could make'

Rubio Comments on U.S. Actions Against Iran

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Sunday that the U.S. took action against Iran because it was “trying to play President Trump,” cautioning that any retaliation from Iran would be “the worst mistake they’ve ever made.”

“It was their choice. We didn’t force their hand,” Rubio told Fox News during an interview on “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Rubio accused Iran of attempting to manipulate Trump, much like they have with previous U.S. presidents over the last 35 years. “They thought they were clever, but they really messed up,” he added.

“If they retaliate, it would be a grave mistake,” he reiterated. “The U.S. has the capability to operate freely, as demonstrated last night when the president dispatched troops for an operation.”

He reminded viewers that Trump had given Tehran two months to negotiate regarding their nuclear program.

Rubio said, “They use diplomacy as a cover, trying to buy time. They think they’re being clever, but they won’t get away with it under this administration.”

America has held Iran accountable for its activities, referring to a recent operation known as “Operation Midnight Hammer.” Although details remain vague, the U.S. has ensured that it is “fully accountable.”

Some analysts are concerned that Iran might target U.S. bases or military assets in the region, recalling a 2020 attack on Al-Assad Air Force Base in Iraq, which was a response to Qasem Soleimani’s assassination.

On the other hand, Israeli efforts have significantly diminished Iran’s military capabilities, particularly regarding its nuclear program.

Rubio described Iran as “completely vulnerable.” He pointed out that they lack control over their airspace and can’t even secure their leader. “If they carry out an attack against us, it’s going to be a huge miscalculation,” he said, although he acknowledged it’s ultimately their choice to make.

A common worry among experts is that Iran might attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil supply.

Rubio mentioned, “China encourages them to consider this because they rely heavily on shipments through the Strait.” He cautioned that closing the waterway would be economic suicide for Iran.

The Secretary of State clarified that this is “not a war with Iran,” insisting that the U.S. does not aim to change the Iranian government through military means.

He emphasized that this message has been clearly conveyed, even in a letter sent to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Rubio reflected on Iran’s longstanding history of instability, noting, “They are the root of disruption in the Middle East, and the world has borne the consequences for four decades.”

He raised the alarming prospect of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, warning of the dangers posed by them reaching that capability.

While some neighboring countries have condemned the recent U.S. strike, Rubio claimed, “I believe they understand that this needed to happen.” He also suggested that European nations should consider imposing sanctions on Tehran.
