Rubio Comments on Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions

On Sunday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarked that discussions around whether the U.S. had intelligence on Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons were “unrelated.” He emphasized that simply having the capability to create nuclear weapons was reason enough for President Trump to take action against Iran’s regime.

During an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Rubio insisted that the existence of resources necessary for nuclear weapons justified these actions, stating, “That’s irrelevant.” He reaffirmed that Iran possesses everything required for weapon development.

Earlier this year, National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard mentioned that the intelligence community believed Iran had not built nuclear weapons and that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had halted the nuclear weapons program back in 2003. However, interpretations of Gabbard’s statements have been debated, as some argued that they misrepresented her warnings regarding Iran’s substantial uranium stockpile.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proactively addressed potential threats from Iran, defending a recent preemptive strike by asserting that “absolutely clear” intelligence indicated Iran was trying to develop a plan for uranium weaponization.

This scrutiny over intelligence practices stems from historical errors, notably the claims about weapons of mass destruction that contributed to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. Notably, Israel’s attack on Iran coincided with the timing of new negotiations regarding the nuclear program.

“They have everything they need to build nuclear weapons. Why are they burying things in a 300-foot mountain?” Rubio questioned, referring specifically to the Fordow fuel enrichment plant. He pointed out that while 90% enrichment is recognized as the threshold for weapon-grade uranium, achieving levels between 60% and 90% is simpler than reaching that 60% mark.

When asked about the “trust deficit” between the U.S. and Iran regarding peaceful negotiations, Rubio firmly asserted that the trust issues had originated in Iran. “The one that should not be trusted is the Iranians because they sponsor terrorism,” he stated. He recalled past events, like the attack in Lebanon that resulted in over 200 American servicemen’s deaths, to underline his point, insisting, “These are people who do this forever.”
