NYC’s Socialist Aspiring Mayor Zohran Mamdani Claims He’s Assisting Police — But Actual Officers Disagree

NYPD Officials Challenge Mamdani’s Overtime Claims

Three officials from the New York Police Department (NYPD) spoke out against mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s assertions that police officers are leaving the force due to excessive overtime. These comments came during an interview with a popular radio show.

Mamdani, who is currently leading in the Democratic primary polls, cited a figure of around 200 officers departing each month, attributing this to a lack of work-life balance caused by enforced overtime.

However, the NYPD officials, who chose to remain anonymous, pushed back on these statements. One officer expressed disbelief over Mamdani’s claims, noting that the department had, in fact, reduced overtime hours. “If the officers truly wanted more hours, they would speak up,” he indicated.

Another officer, referred to as “Anthony,” echoed this skepticism, saying that he finds Mamdani’s statements confusing. He also shared concerns about the candidates in the race, particularly mentioning former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s controversial past.

Citing Cuomo’s decisions linked to nursing homes during the pandemic—mandates that resulted in thousands of deaths—Anthony expressed that he doesn’t view the current options as strong choices.

Cuomo’s standing in the polls appears to be diminishing as well. Meanwhile, at a recent rally, another officer defended the integrity of the NYPD against Mamdani’s criticisms, stating that “no one has to do anything to us.”

Mamdani’s plan includes a proposal to cut the overtime budget significantly, reallocating funds towards a Community Safety Bureau that would deploy mental health professionals instead of police for specific 911 calls deemed non-violent.

He has been steadfast in his position leading up to the primary, indicating he does not favor increasing police funding. In a previous tweet, he emphasized a desire to “end the cycle of violence” associated with the NYPD.

His proposals have sparked reactions across the political spectrum, with some labeling them as radical. Editorials have noted that he often overlooks the complexities involved in governance and downplays the necessity of policing.
