Mike Todd Shares Insights on His Childhood and Responds to Recent Criticism of His Sermon

Recently, Rev. Mike Todd from Transformation Church in Oklahoma City responded to the criticisms he faced during a discussion on Lecley’s “Deep End” podcast. The conversation touched on his attire and his sermon style.

Lecley remarked, “I think it’s good for people to know who you are,” addressing the criticisms directed at Todd.

In his response, Todd reflected on his childhood and his journey within the church. “I was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My parents moved there, and actually, in the late 70s, they helped launch a ministry. All I know is being in church and traveling,” he shared.

“I’m one of five boys, and my parents are my heroes,” Todd continued. “They taught me what faith truly looks like.”

Interestingly, Todd, who started playing drums at just two years old, initially didn’t envision himself in ministry. He had his sights set on a career in music. As he put it, “I didn’t think I would be a pastor. It wasn’t something I prayed for or wanted.”

“But God calls people in ways that are unexpected,” he said. “That’s what happened with me.”

During the podcast, Todd discussed the backlash he’s received as the pastor of Transformation Church, including changes to the church’s decoration and his often “theatrical” sermon presentations, which have gone viral on social media. Lecrah pointed out that some viewers questioned, “Why isn’t he just preaching the words? Why does he need all this?”

“It’s all for context,” Todd explained. “That’s why I’m in the church context. Most people just stand there and teach the word, but I’m trying to present it in a way that resonates. People often remember the visuals more than the actual words.”

He added that every rap song has a music video, and every story becomes a movie, noting that “Instagram and TikTok are popular because of how we connect visually.” It’s not just about listening; it’s about seeing and feeling.

When discussing Jesus’ parables, Todd remarked on how his delivery style might not appeal to everyone but is a reflection of his unique talents.

He emphasized that his faith grows through the challenges, including the times when his sermon illustrations don’t quite land as intended. “Every time something goes viral, there’s something misunderstood about what God is doing,” Todd reflected, acknowledging that these moments are part of his personal refinement.

“So if people comment on my clothes, I just have to believe in what God says about me,” he said. “Every instance of misunderstanding or criticism can refine my faith and help me grow.”
