Jay Harris shares health update after disclosing prostate cancer diagnosis

Jay Harris, the “SportsCenter” anchor, announced that he is on the mend after successfully having his prostate removed, a step he took after his recent cancer diagnosis.

In a video shared on social media Monday, the 60-year-old ESPN veteran discussed how the cancer was contained and had not spread beyond his prostate. “My doctor said the surgery really worked,” he stated. “The cancer that was there stayed put. It didn’t spread to surrounding tissue. So when he removed the prostate, it was all contained. That’s a relief.”

He mentioned that he is recuperating at home and plans to return to work next month. “There are some details I won’t get into, but everything is looking good. I can’t wait to be back at SportsCenter on July 12th,” he shared.

Harris expressed gratitude for the support he’s received. “I appreciate all the prayers, thoughts, and messages. Thank you for your love, really,” he added.

He has garnered support on Instagram from his ESPN colleagues, including Kimberley Martin, Kelsey Riggs, and Ryan Clark.

Harris first disclosed his cancer diagnosis during an appearance on “Good Morning America” on June 5, indicating that his doctors were feeling optimistic about his recovery.

Not long after, he revealed in an essay that he had learned about his prostate cancer diagnosis “more than a month ago.” He also shared that his father had battled and overcome prostate cancer.

Harris reflected on the alarming nature of the diagnosis but noted that, given his family history, it wasn’t entirely unexpected. “Prostate cancer affects black men disproportionately,” he stressed. “As I turn 60, it’s been a topic I’ve always discussed with my doctor during annual check-ups, and I even talk about it with my 26-year-old son.”

Harris has been a part of the ESPN family since February 2003, starting as an anchor for “ESPNews.”
