Remembering Fred Smith: A Remarkable Innovator

In many respects, Fred Smith was the Ben Franklin of our era—an extraordinary innovator and a true patriot. He had immense pride in his service as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam War.

While he was studying at Yale, Smith conceptualized FedEx (Federal Express) for an undergraduate economics paper. He proposed a comprehensive airborne ground system designed to fulfill time-sensitive shipping needs. Reportedly, his professor did not think much of it, giving it a mediocre grade, but Smith later transformed the idea into a groundbreaking business.

He launched Federal Express in 1971, with operations officially starting in 1973. Smith’s vision altered the logistics landscape and laid the groundwork for modern express delivery services.

It’s hard to imagine anyone else achieving what he did. With a combination of financing, logistics expertise, sheer determination, and some daring, he built one of the most powerful transport companies worldwide.

He aggressively crafted memorable and effective advertising campaigns, mastering one of the most iconic slogans in television history. Smith wasn’t shy about criticizing government inefficiency, often humorously comparing FedEx’s performance with the struggles of the U.S. Postal Service. His company surpassed them, boasting far superior on-time arrival records.

FedEx operated more planes than any other entity outside the U.S. Air Force, taking full advantage of airport facilities throughout the night. Smith even established his own weather services, air traffic control systems, and security frameworks, citing a lack of trust in government capabilities.

Employing 500,000 Americans, he generated significant wealth for countless investors. He was one of the first to contribute generously to various groups, consistently sending unsolicited donations at the year’s start.

Even towards the end of his life, he kept his illness under wraps, encouraging others to live joyfully, focused on quality rather than quantity of days.

Since Reagan’s presidency, he has been recognized by various leaders, earning the nickname “Fred Ex” from close friends.

Smith’s dedication was evident as he continued to run FedEx during a turbulent six-month period when many businesses shut down. His efforts helped stabilize the U.S. economy and ensured FedEx employees maintained excellent health records during a challenging time.

It’s as if the world seems a little less vibrant without him.
