UK Warns of 'Significant' Domestic Attacks by Iranian Agents and Proxies

A UK government minister has stated that Iran’s intelligence activities in the UK are already happening frequently, with the potential for increased threats as Middle Eastern conflicts continue.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds expressed significant concern over the Iranian regime’s ongoing surveillance in the UK, noting that it has reached a “critical level.” He also highlighted worries about “terrorism supported by Iran.”

In an interview with Sky News, Reynolds remarked that following the US’s denial of its path to nuclear armament after launching a precision strike against Iranian nuclear sites, the frequency of Iranian cyberattacks has notably intensified. He commented, “There’s Iranian activity on the streets of Britain.”

He emphasized that the issue of Iran’s terrorism and espionage is not a future concern; it’s an immediate reality.

The minister also cautioned that it would be “naive” to overlook the escalating threat posed by Iran as regional conflicts heighten. He questioned whether Iran wants to remain an unstable presence both in the region and globally, remarking, “What has that achieved for them? Where are the people of Iran? They should seriously consider a better path.”

Recent Iranian plots linked to Britain include a foiled attempt to attack the Israeli embassy and various cyberattacks. The head of MI5 has noted an “unprecedented pace and scale” in Iran’s efforts to undermine the UK, which seems to coincide with ongoing events in the Middle East.

The head of MI5 conveyed that:

Similar to Russian intelligence, Iranian nationals heavily utilize criminals as proxies for actions, ranging from international drug trafficking to petty fraud. Last December, an individual was sentenced for espionage activities targeting the then prime minister of Iran’s international media group.

Finding criminals acting on behalf of the state shares some characteristics with detecting terrorist activities online. It remains a familiar challenge, but our efforts will continue.

If you are tempted to engage in such activities, remember this: If you accept money from Iran, Russia, or any other state and commit illegal acts in the UK, you will face the full force of national security measures. It’s a decision you’ll come to regret.

The UK is not alone in addressing these threats. US Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem remarked on Monday that the US is evaluating the risks posed by “sleep sleeper cells,” commenting, “Some may be already among us, or they could be abroad for a short time, only to return radicalized.”
