Simone Biles posts puzzling 'madness' message after leaving X

Although Simone Biles does not have an X account, she’s been active on social media, sharing her thoughts.

On Monday, she wrote on her Instagram story, “Strength comes from the madness we survive.”

Biles, a seven-time Olympic gold medalist, has recently been involved in controversy stemming from a public dispute with former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines regarding transgender athletes.

Gaines, who has voiced criticism against trans athletes, made remarks about a Minnesota High School Softball Championship team, which included trans athletes, by posting photos without allowing comments.

On June 6, she remarked, “You’re expected when your star player is a boy.”

Biles, age 28, responded to Gaines’ comments, saying, “You’re really sick. You’re pushing this campaign because you lost the race. Straighten the losers straight,” referencing Gaines’ fifth-place finish in the 2022 NCAA Championship alongside transgender athlete Lia Thomas.

“We should uplift the trans community and look for ways to make sports inclusive; it’s probably about time for a transgender category in all sports!”

Biles also made some remarks about Gaines’ appearance.

In response, Gaines labeled Biles’ statement as “very sad,” asking rhetorically, “Is Simone Biles a male apology at the expense of a young girl’s dream?”

Biles later shared a follow-up message, explaining her beliefs on competitive equity and inclusivity in sports. She acknowledged that the current framework doesn’t effectively balance these important issues, which often results in heated disputes. She also mentioned that she regretted getting personal with Gaines.

Biles stated, “These issues are sensitive and complex. I really don’t have all the answers, but I think they start with empathy and respect. I am not defending policies that undermine fairness in women’s sports, but I do support rules that ensure fair competition while promoting inclusion.”

Gaines has publicly reacted to Biles’ decision to delete her X account. She noted that Biles’ views are “incredibly unpopular” and implied that the gymnast isn’t missing the account much.

Gaines expressed disappointment, saying, “It’s sad to see such a genius fall like this.”
