South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson declares his candidacy for governor

South Carolina Attorney General Announces Gubernatorial Bid

Alan Wilson, the Attorney General of South Carolina, has declared his intention to run for governor of the state. He made this announcement alongside his family, expressing his desire to bring significant change.

“As your governor, we will provide meaningful relief to hardworking individuals. My aim is to ultimately eliminate state income tax,” Wilson stated during his speech earlier this week. He has held the position of attorney general since 2011 and is now pushing forward with his gubernatorial campaign.

In his address, Wilson emphasized his commitment to restructuring the government in South Carolina. “We’ll clean up the government from top to bottom. We will root out waste, fraud, and abuse wherever we find it,” he asserted.

Interestingly, U.S. Representative Nancy Mace has also hinted at a candidacy for the governor’s seat. She has previously criticized Wilson, claiming he has a record of protecting individuals involved in disturbing crimes. “How do you explain his record of protecting children? You either safeguard children or you protect predators. There’s no middle ground,” she posted on social media.

In response, Robert Kittle, a spokesperson for Wilson’s office, dismissed Mace’s allegations as “ridiculous.” He emphasized that many victims of abuse have been brought to justice under Wilson’s tenure.

Wilson has defended his record against Mace’s criticisms, pointing out the dedication of those in his office who work to protect children. He cited that social media attacks from his opponents often ignore the facts and distort the truth.

Mace responded to Wilson’s defense, calling it an elaborate deflection filled with excuses. She argued that the situation is reflective of his inability to effectively serve as Attorney General.

Meanwhile, current Governor Henry McMaster, a Republican, is barred from seeking another term due to state constitutional restrictions. Having assumed office in 2017 after Nikki Haley’s resignation, he successfully won re-election in 2018 and 2022.
