CBS’s legal team criticized President Trump’s lawsuit as “merciless” on Monday, despite having recently offered $15 million. Trump is pursuing $20 billion from CBS News and its parent company, Paramount Global, claiming they interfered with an interview featuring then-Vice President Kamala Harris before the election.
A source close to Trump indicated, “CBS is really feeling the pressure. They do not want this case in court.” In a surprising move, Trump turned down Paramount’s $15 million settlement proposal, insisting on a larger payment along with an apology.
CBS’s lawyers dismissed the lawsuit as baseless, even while engaging in settlement discussions. They argued that it appears Trump is attacking news organizations over editorial choices, requesting the court dismiss his modified complaint. They contended that Trump’s aggressive legal approach threatens First Amendment rights.
As reported last month, Trump’s rejection of the settlement underscores his commitment to addressing what he sees as CBS’s targeting of his reputation, accusing them of election interference during crucial times.
Additionally, CBS is facing internal challenges, including the sudden departure of its CEO, which has rattled staff amidst Trump’s lawsuit. This ongoing legal situation stems from a controversial interview conducted in October with Harris by “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker, where critics accused CBS of distorting her responses.
Although there has been pressure from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to release an unedited transcript of the Harris interview amid a distortion policy investigation, CBS had initially refused to comply.
Despite the disagreements and the tumult within CBS, controlling shareholder Shari Redstone is reportedly open to resolving the lawsuit, even amid her own health issues. Observers suggest that a settlement could facilitate plans for a merger with Skydance Media, aiming to avoid potential reprisals from Trump or regulatory bodies like the FCC.
