Knicks Face Coaching Decisions After Parting Ways with Thibodeau
The New York Knicks are navigating a coaching dilemma following their recent decision to move on from Tom Thibodeau after five seasons. Under his leadership, the team had its best run this century, reaching the Eastern Conference Finals in 2025. Despite that success, the front office determined it was time for a change.
Currently, the Knicks are in the process of finding a new coach, which has proven to be a bit of a challenge, given the slow progression in securing formal interviews. They’ve reportedly reached out to various candidates, including Jason Kidd from the Dallas Mavericks, but haven’t had much luck so far.
In the midst of this uncertainty, guard Deuce McBride remains upbeat. “We’re positive. It’s all good. We’re going to make it work,” he remarked jokingly about the situation, adding that such decisions were “above my pay grade.” McBride spoke at Fanatics Fest, which took place not far from Madison Square Garden, where he plays his home games.
Interestingly, McBride expressed how special it is to play in New York, saying, “The love I get, it’s a special place. Playing in New York, nothing like that.” That sentiment really captures the mix of pressure and excitement that comes with being a Knicks player.
Thibodeau was let go just before a substantial $30 million contract extension would have kicked in. Not long ago, the Knicks were in a rough spot, missing the playoffs for seven straight years, even recording just 17 wins during the 2018-19 season.
However, under Thibodeau, things changed. The team made the playoffs in each of the last three years, marking a significant turnaround that hadn’t happened since the early 2010s. Despite the recent shakeup, the Knicks are hoping to build on that positive momentum as they look for their next leader.
