NATO’s Executive Director, Mark Rutte, extended his congratulations to President Donald Trump on Tuesday. He expressed his appreciation for Trump’s decisive military actions against Iran’s nuclear capabilities, stating, “We’re all safe now.”
Trump shared this message on his social media platform, and NATO confirmed that the commendation came from Rutte. This took place shortly before Trump’s departure for The Hague, where a NATO summit was scheduled.
In his message, Rutte emphasized, “Congratulations. I’m grateful for your decisive action in Iran. It was truly extraordinary, and no one else was going to step up.” He added that this move enhances overall safety.
As Trump headed to The Hague, he openly criticized both Israel and Iran, suggesting that their ceasefire agreement was being violated. Rutte remarked, “Donald, you really propelled us at a critical moment for both America and Europe. You’re achieving what previous U.S. presidents haven’t been able to for decades.”
Rutte’s message hinted at upcoming challenges, as NATO leaders are anticipating discussions about contributing 5% of their gross domestic product to enhance collective defense against external threats.
Spain has secured an agreement with NATO to be exempt from this 5% goal, while Trump argued that the target shouldn’t apply exclusively to the U.S. This raises questions about the commitments of other NATO members like Belgium, Canada, France, and Italy, with Rutte acknowledging that meeting the 5% target could be a “long road.” He added, “NATO has no opt-outs, and every member must share the burden.”
