Incident at Wayne Church Involves Armed Suspect

During a Sunday service at Crosspoint Community Church in Wayne, Michigan, Jay Trombley, a member of the church’s security team, initially mistook a loud noise for something mechanical. He soon realized the gravity of the situation as he saw people fleeing the area and inquired about what was happening.

He recounted that a young woman informed him it was an “AR-15” and indicated the source of the noise, prompting him to head that way. As part of the volunteer security team, Trombley and others reacted swiftly.

Police later identified the suspect as 31-year-old Brian Anthony Browning from Romulus, Michigan. Browning was dressed in camouflage and a tactical vest, toting an AR-15-style rifle along with numerous loaded magazines and a semi-automatic handgun. Reports indicated he had begun firing at the church.

In an unexpected turn, a church member driving a pickup truck struck Browning, according to statements from Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. Police confirmed that the security team locked the church’s front door and confronted the shooter outside. It was there that one team member fatally shot Browning, who was pronounced dead on the scene after first responders attempted lifesaving measures.

One member of the security team sustained a foot injury and was taken to the hospital, where they were later reported to be in stable condition following surgery. This individual did not engage with the suspect, as clarified by Deputy Director Finley Carter III.

Pastor Kelly shared that although Browning did not manage to enter the church, he fired several shots in its direction. Meanwhile, it remains unclear how many shots were fired overall. Browning was said to have attended services at the church previously, which adds a layer of complexity to the incident.

Trombley expressed profound emotions regarding the situation, stating, “We learned that evil had come to our door, but God’s protective hand was above us.” He reflected on the events, contemplating how he would reconcile his actions with faith.

Although Trombley doesn’t regard himself as a hero, he feels a strong sense of duty to protect his church family. He emphasized that they all acted instinctively to safeguard their community during a moment of crisis.

In the aftermath, church officials released a statement expressing gratitude that the incident did not result in more severe injuries. They recognized the bravery of those who intervened and commended local law enforcement for their prompt response.
