State Department on Iran-Israel truce: 'It's fragile' but 'did come together'

The State Department has labeled the recent US-mediated ceasefire between Israel and Iran as “vulnerable” rather than “stable,” citing ongoing concerns about potential breaches by either party.

During a press conference on Tuesday, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce noted, “The dynamics of a ceasefire are delicate, and while there has been some quiet in the area, it remains fragile.”

Bruce also commented on former President Trump’s habit of expressing his views through social media and official statements, suggesting that this approach helps keep diplomatic efforts active.

Trump disclosed the ceasefire terms between Israel and Iran on Monday, expressing his belief that it could bring an end to what he termed a “12-day war.” His announcement followed the US’s intervention in the conflict, which involved strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend.

“Congratulations to all involved. A comprehensive ceasefire agreement has been reached between Israel and Iran,” Trump stated.

He indicated that Iran would stop its military actions first, with Israel maintaining its stance, asserting that combat would cease within 24 hours.

Nonetheless, early Tuesday, the ceasefire seemed precarious as Israel accused Iran of breaching the agreement and vowed to respond. Iran rejected these accusations.

Trump issued a stern warning directed at Iran, though his focus appeared to be more on Israel.

Shortly thereafter, Trump affirmed that Israel would refrain from launching attacks, announcing that the ceasefire remained intact. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later confirmed that Israel would “halt further strikes” against Iran after consulting with Trump.

“Israel will not attack Iran. All aircraft will return home,” Trump declared.
